The Alchemy of Fairy Tales
Where the method begins.
Volume I sets out to do something the literature had largely left undone: give individual Grimm tales a complete depth psychological reading in which alchemy is not an ornament but the organizing lens. Jungian scholarship has long acknowledged alchemy’s place in Jung’s own work. Fewer studies have carried that lens all the way through a single tale, image by image, to its end.
Working from original translations, and drawing on decades of clinical practice, this volume follows four tales along the movement from dysfunction toward wholeness — what Lois describes as the shift from pathologizing a symptom to psychologizing it. What emerges is a template usable in the seminar room and the consulting room equally.

Volume II continues the work begun in the first, extending the alchemical reading to further tales and to the questions Volume I opened but could not finish. Read together, the two volumes form a single sustained argument: that the fairy tale is not a simplified story for children but a refined archetypal structure, polished by generations of retelling, and that its images track the psyche’s own movement toward wholeness with unusual precision.
As in the first volume, the analyses hold two settings at once. The scholar will find a method that can be tested against other tales. The clinician will recognize the patterns arriving daily in the consulting room, and a language for them that does not reduce them to diagnosis.

The Alchemy of Fairy Tales
Alchemy as a living process.
The third volume is both a continuation and a departure. It remains a depth psychological study of fairy tales, but it functions equally as a working textbook of alchemy, symbolism, and the individuation process — addressed to the intellect, the imagination, and the soul at the same time.
Most scholarship treats alchemy as a closed historical system, interesting chiefly for what it once meant. Volume III treats it as something still underway: a process that unfolds in the mind of the reader, the artist, the healer, and anyone seeking meaning. It is not a textbook in the sense of instruction delivered in sequence. It is closer to a spiral, returning to each tale, symbol, and operation at a different depth each time.
